Welcome back to the DPV Podcast! Episode 6 finds us broadcasting from beautiful Leavenworth, Washington, where we’re enjoying a much-needed vacation. We’ve hit a milestone – 4,000 subscribers! A huge thank you to everyone who watches, comments, and supports the show. We love interacting with you guys.
This week, we’re talking about how to incorporate your love of cars into your family vacations. Because let’s face it, sometimes you need a little automotive fix, even when you’re supposed to be relaxing. These are ideas that involve the whole family, not just disappearing on your own car-related adventure.
1. Car Shows on the Road: One of the best ways to experience the car culture of a new place is to check out local car shows. Smaller towns often have unique events, and you’ll see cars you wouldn’t normally see back home. Think about it: the same cars tend to circulate at local shows. When you travel, you get a fresh perspective. Plus, small-town shows often coincide with community events, meaning fun for the whole family, with farmers’ markets, food vendors, and more. Unfortunately, Leavenworth was a bust for car shows this weekend, but we always check!
2. Project Car Family Adventures: If your project car is road-worthy (and that’s a big if – maiden voyages on family vacations are risky!), consider taking it on your trip. There’s nothing quite like cruising the backroads in your classic ride. We highly recommend staying off the interstates and exploring smaller towns. It’s a fantastic way to see the country, discover hidden gems, and enjoy a slower pace. Plus, breakdowns are a little less stressful when you’re not on a busy highway.
3. Jeep Rentals for Off-Road Fun: Renting a Jeep for a portion of your vacation can be an amazing experience. We had a blast exploring Sedona in a rented Jeep Rubicon. It was surprisingly affordable, especially considering the lack of repair bills afterward! Sometimes, it’s nice to have a reliable rig with all the modern comforts, ready to tackle any terrain.
4. Supercar Dreams: For a different kind of thrill, consider renting a supercar. This is probably best for a couples’ getaway. Imagine cruising in a Lamborghini Murcielago – talk about a memorable vacation! It’s a great way to experience the excitement of a high-performance vehicle without the long-term commitment (and expense) of ownership.
5. Mopeds, Go-Peds, and Beach Cruising: Renting mopeds or go-peds can be a fun way to explore beach towns. They might sound a little dorky, but they’re surprisingly enjoyable. We’ve had some hilarious adventures on mopeds with the kids. Just be safe! (And maybe don’t let your toddler fall asleep on one…)
6. Theme Parks and Automotive Thrills: For those who love speed and excitement, theme park rides can offer a great automotive fix. Roller coasters, simulators, and even themed areas like Cars Land at Disney can scratch that itch. We’re hitting up a mountain coaster here in Leavenworth, and we’ll be sure to share some footage.
7. Supercar Spotting: A fun game to play in bigger cities is supercar spotting. See how many Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and other exotics you can find. It’s a fun way to appreciate automotive design and dream a little.
8. Classic Car Hunting: Similar to supercar spotting, keep an eye out for classic cars, especially those rusting away in fields. You never know what treasures you might find. This was a tradition on our family road trips growing up, thanks to our dad’s love for cars.
9. Craigslist Road Trip Edition: While you’re on vacation, check out the local Craigslist listings. It’s a fun way to see what kind of projects are popular in different areas and what prices are like. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s still interesting to browse.
So, there you have it – some ideas for incorporating your passion for cars into your family vacations. It’s all about finding a balance between family time and automotive fun. Let us know in the comments what your favorite car-related vacation activities are! Wheel it, Wreck it, Wrench it, Repeat!!!
