The Big Block “Struggle-Cuddle”: Reviving the G30

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Alex, it’s that he has a magnet for “cheap” projects that end up being a physical workout. This G30 van is a beast, but getting it home was a bit of a grind—literally. We had a slight “casualty” with the fiberglass running board during loading [03:00], but hey, a few sheet metal screws and some grit, and we’ll have it back in place.

The Surprise Under the Doghouse

Alex was told this thing had a 350. Usually, people oversell what’s under the hood, but this time, the universe smiled on us. He popped the doghouse and found 454 Big Block power [05:42]! That’s the kind of “Victory” we live for. Of course, the “Pain” followed shortly after when he realized he had to “struggle-cuddle” a massive, front-post-only battery into a space clearly designed for someone with much smaller hands [07:03].

The “Science” of the Revival

The van had been sitting since 2013, and the fuel situation was… well, let’s just say it didn’t meet EPA standards for “liquid.”

  • The Tank: Alex dropped the tank solo (using a motorcycle jack—pro move!) and found the fuel pump assembly had basically turned into goo [17:14].
  • The “MacGyver” Fix: During the install, he accidentally ripped a Hardline. His solution? A piece of heater hose, split down the back, and two hose clamps [20:31]. It’s not NASA-approved, but it held fuel, and that’s what matters when you’re chasing that first fire-up!
  • The Swap: After the original injectors refused to play ball, he “appropriated” a throttle body from a buddy [23:54]. Suddenly, we had “squirty-squirty” [26:29], and that big 454 roared back to life!

Why We Do This

Watching Alex navigate that cramped van interior—dealing with “manageries” of standard and metric bolts [16:04] and getting a face full of dirt and fuel [15:30]—is exactly what DPV is about. It’s messy, it’s frustrating, and your armpits will probably end up smelling like 87 octane.

But then, you hear that Big Block idle [34:10]. You realize the brakes actually work [29:32]. And suddenly, that $1,500 “junk” is a ticket to a National Park road trip next summer.

Josh’s Tech Tip: Always check the RockAuto clearance section. Alex scored a Wix air filter for under $3 [35:11]. When you’re on a shoestring budget, those small wins keep the project moving!

The van—let’s call it “Big Blue” for now—is officially a runner. It’s got 90s paint, a VHS player for ACDC tapes [04:32], and enough torque to pull a house. Stay tuned, because the “Victory” lap for this one is going to be epic.

Wheel it, Wreck it, Wrench it, Repeat!
